Maps for MRV and planning in rice production (Vietnam and Bangladesh)

Administrative map

The administrative map contains layers presenting all administrative levels shared by the Global Administrative Map. The data are freely available for academic use and other non-commercial use. Administrative layers are in shape file format, and it uses Geographic longitude-latitude projection (EPSG 4326).

Soil and climatic maps

Climatic maps

Climatic data shared within this platform consists of dekadal (10 days) precipitation (mm) and potential evapotranspiration (mm). The Dekadal precipitation data is calculated from daily data (1998 -2013 for Vietnam and 2011-2020 for Bangladesh) downloaded from NASA Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources. Potential evapotranspiration (PET) is computed from solar radiation (Mj/m2/day) and temperature (oC) following the Hargreaves' method. Map layers are resampled using the Thin Plate Spline method and stored in Geotiff format at a resolution of 5 arc minutes with Geographic longitude-latitude projection (EPSG 4326).

Dekadal climatic data can be downloaded here:

Soil texture

The data contains three layers for concentration (g/kg) of sand, silt, and clay particle sizes that make up soil texture or mineral fraction of the soil. The data is extracted from global soil texture layers at the depth of 0- 30cm with the Geographic longitude-latitude projection (EPSG 4326) shared by the Global gridded soil information. Soil texture layers have been resampled to a resolution of 5 arc minutes from the original resolution of 8 arc seconds.

Land Use Maps

Rice extent

Rice extent layers of Bangladesh and Vietnam were extracted from the global data developed by the Spatial Production Allocation Model. The rice layer have a resolution of 5 arc minutes and it uses Geographic longitude-latitude projection (EPSG 4326).

Rice Production

The rice calendar and production layers of Bangladesh and Vietnam can be extracted from the Rice Atlas --  a spatial database consisting of data on rice planting and harvesting dates by growing season and estimates of monthly production for all rice-producing countries. The map layers are stored in shape file format and it uses Geographic longitude-latitude projection (EPSG 4326).

The rice calendar and production layers are available at IRRI Dataverse.

Land Use Map for 13 Provinces in Mekong River Delta, Vietnam in 2022

The agricultural land use maps at the provincial scale in the MRD were produced by using remote sensing (active Synthetic Aperture Radar images from Sentinel-1A sensor and optical images from Sentinel-2 sensor) and integration information (administrative boundary and official inventory data in 13 provinces of the MRD from the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment). The maps were stored in Geotiff format, using EPSG:32648 - WGS 84 / UTM zone 48N, at the resolution of 10m x 10m.

Suitability Maps

AWD Suitability Maps

Samples of AWD suitability maps were developed for Bangladesh and Vietnam using the MapAWD tool, following the method introduced by Nelson et al. (2015) and  Sander et al. (2017). The map is stored in Geotiff/asc format, using Geographic longitude-latitude projection (EPSG 4326).

Crop Suitability Maps of MRD

The monthly suitability maps of annual crops (rice, maize, watermelon) and overall suitability maps of perennial crops (citrus, mango, longan, pineapple, coconut, sugarcane) were developed for the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam at a resolution of 250m x 250m.  Soil physical and chemical properties, topography (slope), climate (temperature and rainfall), and irrigation water were used for evaluating the suitability. The map is stored in Geotiff format, using Geographic longitude-latitude projection (EPSG 4326).

Climate Risk and Adaptation Maps

Climate risk and adaptation maps for different crop of MRD

The maps were produced by using local knowledge to identify/verify the local specific climate-risks (flood and drought/salinity) and corresponding adaptation plans for main crops in normal and extreme years. These maps were stored in Mapinfo (tab) file format and it uses EPSG:32648 - WGS 84 / UTM zone 48N.
