Projects
The Paddy Rice Component of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition's (CCAC) Agriculture Initiative aims to implement the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) technology, on large scale, in Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Colombia to significantly reduce methane emissions from rice fields.
The project aims to develop an innovative approach based on highlighting co-benefits of mitigation options, integrating alternate wetting and drying (AWD) into a farming strategy, as opposed to approaches focusing on emissions reductions only.
SAMPLES addresses the dearth of reliable information about greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture in tropical countries. SAMPLES scientists work with developing countries to improve data on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation potentials for smallholder agriculture.
The Policy Information and Response Platform on Climate Change and Rice in the ASEAN and its member countries (PIRCCA) Project stems from the recognition of
(a) the important role of rice for food security in the ASEAN and
(b) the specific vulnerabilities of rice production to climate change.
The interdisciplinary research unit Introducing Non-flooded crops in rice-dominated landscapes: Impact on CarbOn, Nitrogen, and water cycles (ICON) explores and quantifies the ecological consequences of future changes in rice production.
The project on Greenhouse gas Mitigation in Irrigated Rice Systems in Asia (MIRSA) seeks to develop an improved water management, based on alternate wetting and drying (AWD), that can always reduce soil-derived CO2-eq emissions (CH4 + N2O) during the rice growing season from irrigated rice paddies, by 30% compared to the conventional practice.
