Carbon-Footprint Labeling System
The Digital Information System for Rice Product Labeling of Carbon-Footprints based on Yield Recovery (DISPLAY) has been developed to provide a user-friendly method to estimate the carbon footprint of rice across the entire value chain that allows for flexibility and user input.
The calculations are based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for field emissions and the Life Cycle Analysis approach for the emissions and food loss that occur during the harvesting and processing phases.
How does it work?
The interface guides users through each step of the field management activities and post-harvest processing that are relevant for measuring the carbon footprint. A selection of default values have been provided based on empirical measurements from scientific experiments or sourced from scientific literature. DISPLAY also allows users the flexibility to enter their own measured values or values from literature that have not been included by default.
The output provides the carbon footprint from the individual stages of the value chain and allows for comparison across different management options for use as a decision tool. Additionally, the output provides the breakdown of the emissions of different greenhouse gases (GHG), namely, methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
