FarMoRe - Farm activity Monitoring and Reporting
The Farm activity Monitoring and Reporting tool (FarMoRe) is a performance assessment application co-designed with farmers, extension agents, and cooperatives in the Mekong River Delta (MRD) of Viet Nam to track and assess performance and progress in terms of sustainability and agroecological transitions at both farm and cooperative levels. Integrated in the national RiceMoRe system, it contributes field-level data that supports the validation of farming practices and product traceability. FarMoRe benchmarks farmers' performance against scientific thresholds for sustainable criteria following the 1 Must-do 5 Reductions rice production package. This is a sustainable cultivation package that has been widely promoted and applied in (MRD), although to various extents. The 1M5R package promotes a reduction of chemical inputs along with effective and efficient use of seeds and water, while reducing post-harvest losses and encouraging circular agriculture through waste management. The FarMoRe tool tracks farmers' progress towards sustainable goals and enables co-creation of solutions together with other farmers and intermediaries. Furthermore, its flexibility to adjust assessment criteria enables product tracing and certification by any standards.
FarMoRe also fosters the co-creation of agroecological practices through the training curriculum targeted to intermediaries. FarMoRe provides flexible benchmarking standards for data to assess adherence to sustainability parameters, including greenhouse gas emissions and agronomic chemical uses. The performance assessment response enables discussion and co-creation of solutions between intermediaries and farmers. The results can also be used to tailor advisories. It strives to promote collaborative engagement and knowledge sharing between farmers, cooperatives and extensionists. Promising areas of linkage between FarMoRe and other digital solutions such as farmers' social networks and e-commerce platforms are being explored to optimize its full potential.
Data collected in FarMoRe is encrypted and integrated into the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development's (MARD) database, ensuring that evidence-based policy decisions can be made while maintaining user privacy.
Developed in 2020 through co-creation with farmers and agents, with an extensive review of existing digital tools in rice production, and consultation with tool developers, FarMoRe had undergone continuous refinement based on stakeholder feedback and was officially transferred to MARD in September 2024. To ensure accessibility and inclusivity, the app remains free for all users.
Target users
FarMoRe has been designed to respond to the actual needs for systematic and time-series data recording and reporting of farmers and extensionists. Research showed that farmers' most frequent and trusted source of information and technical advice is face-to-face discussion with extensionists. Yet, this information hasn’t been recorded systematically, which causes difficulty for field agents to provide tailored and progress-based advisory to farmers. A government-led incentive program also created the need to assess the adoption of advanced production practices, such as 1M5R.
FarMoRe caters to these specific needs, targeting a diverse group of users:
Extension agents can use the app to monitor and advise farmers to improve farming practices.
Farmers can monitor and record their practices, and test practice changes, enabling them to transition towards agroecology while improving their income.
Agricultural management officers are equipped to support policy implementation and ensure alignment with national agroecology strategies.
Cooperatives and companies can support their members in adopting advanced farming packages and participate in co-creation activities to refine and improve these practices.
