Measurement, Reporting, Verification Toolbox
This data-sharing platform is an output of the project on Mitigation Options to Reduce Methane Emissions in Paddy Rice developed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) with support from the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC). The project aims to support large-scale mitigation through national plans and development programs to reduce methane (CH4) emissions from rice production systems in Bangladesh and Vietnam.
This platform integrates databases and tools that support the planning and implementation of NAMA in the respective countries. Some of the tools and guidelines can be adapted to other countries/regions as well.
MRV Tools & Software
Useful tools for monitoring, reporting, and verification of NAMAs in rice
Source-selective and Emission-adjusted GHG CalculaTOR for Cropland – SECTOR is a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Calculator for cropland based on the IPCC Tier 2 approach. This tool is presently available in Excel and a web-based version and requires inputs from the user on cropping area, yield, and management practices. SECTOR has been developed in response to increasing interest in mitigation studies in cropland, in particular rice production.
Applicable for: GHG inventories in rice, GHG mitigation projects, and evaluation of GHG field experiments
The newly developed tool for calculating C-Footprints of rice products (CF-Rice) aims at streamlining information exchange on C-Footprints of rice products among research, policy makers, food industry and consumers.
Applicable for: GHG inventories in rice, GHG mitigation projects, and evaluation of GHG field experiments
The Digital Information System for Rice Product Labeling of Carbon-Footprints based on Yield Recovery (DISPLAY) has been developed to provide a user-friendly method to estimate the carbon footprint of rice across the entire value chain that allows for flexibility and user input.
Applicable for: GHG inventories in rice, GHG mitigation projects, and evaluation of GHG field experiments
MapAWD is a Microsoft® Excel-based tool developed to evaluate the bio-physical suitability of the AWD water-saving technique. In this method, a spatially explicit water balance model is used to analyze the climatically suitable area for AWD.
Applicable for: GHG mitigation projects, and evaluation of GHG field experiments
The Cost-Impact Analysis for Emission Reduction Projects (COMPARE) is a tool developed by UNIQUE Forestry and Land Use in conjunction with International Rice Research Institute. This tool is a Microsoft® Excel workbook with built-in formulas and functions that allow automatic calculation of Cost Benefit Analysis indicators and GHG emissions according to the user's defined inputs.
Applicable for: GHG mitigation projects
The RiceMo tool is built to advance the work of monitoring and planning rice production at central and local agriculture offices. It assists in collecting and reporting data on rice cultivation progress on weekly, seasonal, and annum bases.
Applicable for: GHG mitigation projects, and evaluation of GHG field experiments
